Just this week one of my students said it: “Writing is thinking on paper.” How true. Elie Wiezel said he wrote to “understand as well as to  be understood.” I know what he means. I learn things when I write–things I didn’t know–or didn’t see before. I suppose it’s one reason I wrote the columns in Best Years. Most of them came from journals, which were written the first time more for me than for readers. Journaling helped me get my thoughts in front of me so I could understand, evaluate and, yes, even challenge them. If you’re at this site trying to figure things out–you, your spouse, your life–then maybe the same will help you. If it does, I’d like to hear about it. Take care.
